I just received an email regarding American’s new baggage delivery service which began on August 6th, I guess I missed the official announcement. The airline teamed up with BAGS VIP Luggage Delivery to offer delivery service for luggage when originating at more than 200 domestic airports and select per-screened international airports. The cost of delivery is $29.95 for one bag, $39.95 for two bags, and $49.95 for three to ten bags. These fees are in addition to the normal checked baggage charges for non exempt passengers. Delivery is guaranteed to your destination (hotel, home, office, etc.) within four hours and can be made to destinations up to 100 miles from the airport. Destination exceeding 40 miles will incur an additional $1 per-mile charge and may take up to six hours for delivery.
They are marketing the service as a way to save time at the airport and lessen “traveler stress levels when flying”, however it seems like it would actually add additional hassle to my travel plans. I’d rather spend the time at the baggage carrousel and have my bag when leaving the airport. In addition, if you arrive after 11pm, your bag is not guaranteed for delivery until noon the next day. As per the FAQs, cancellations due to operational or weather issues will still carry a $15 cancellation fee! Delays have to be reported immediately so that bags can be picked up at a later time or on a re-routed flight.
I did see one benefit for extremely over-sized and heavy bags when potentially relocating or transporting more than personal luggage. As per the FAQs:
Q: Is there a surcharge for overweight of oversized luggage?
A: There is no surcharge for overweight or oversized luggage.
Q: What are the weight limits for baggage and what will be considered and oversized bag?
A: There are no weight limits for VIP Luggage Delivery. We follow the same guidelines set forth by American Airlines.
So, will you be utilizing this service, picking up your own luggage, or packing a carry-on?
