My friend Peter, who travels more than anyone I know, recently had a 3 1/2 hour layover in Zurich back in October. Forget about the lounge, Peter spent his free time biking around the grounds surrounding Zurich Airport. I actually didn’t even know this was an option during my last Swiss flight and ZRH layover, all of my time spent in the SWISS lounges. Peter arrived early enough in the morning that he was able to spot fox and deer, as well as frogs, rabbits, beavers, and boar on his ride through the fields and marshes of the conservation land surrounding the airport. He estimated his journey at around 15 miles, with nature at times being pleasantly interrupted by the takeoff roll and roar of four A340 engines. Sounds great, nature and airplane spotting in one! Anyone can rent bikes, skates, or walking poles at the airport service center, though you will have to pass back through the security checkpoints after your excursion. Rentals and pricing can be found here, with a 4 hour bike rental costing about 20 EUR/CHF. Peter cautions that the service center noted that fox and deer are normally only visible in the early morning hours, perfect for those transatlantic arrivals.

Where do you leave your carryon?
@Mordy – There’s a locker storage area where you can store your carryon.
