It’s Back! Google Maps Now Available for iPhone with Turn-By-Turn Navi

by Adam

One of my favorite mobile travel apps, Google Maps, was taken from me about a month ago when I upgraded to the iPhone 5. No matter where I was in the world, I’d type in the restaurant, attraction, museum, etc. that I wanted to visit and Google Maps was somehow always able to get me there. From Dublin to Johannesburg and Singapore, Google Maps was my constant travel companion. It even saved me a ton of money earlier this year when I used it in both Morocco and Serbia to check the routes of some shady taxi drivers. I was also a big fan of Google’s mass transit directions which were available for cities around the world. Now granted, it was just a mapping app, of which there are several in the app store (some a whole lot more powerful than Google Maps), however it had become second nature after using it for so many years on the road and I wanted it back.

As such, I’m excited to report that Google has now officially released Google Maps for iOS. The app is compatible with the iPhone 3Gs,/4/4S/5 and even comes with a voice guided turn-by-turn navigation enhancement, public transit directions, street/satellite/Google Earth views, and Google local search. You can check it out in the app store now!

The problem is that other non-map apps always reference the default map app – Apple Maps. So although I’m happy that there is now a Google Maps app, it still means that, for example, when I check in on Facebook, FB will use the Apple maps to locate me and not Google.

@Paul Feagan – Luckily Google also released Google Maps SDK for iOS- “alongside the newly designed Google Maps for iPhone, we’re also excited to announce the Google Maps SDK for iOS. With the Google Maps SDK for iOS, developers can feature Google maps in their applications on the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. Also, the SDK makes it simple to link to Google Maps for iPhone from inside your app, enabling your users to easily search and get directions.”
