New 30K AAdvantage Code for Citibank Checking Accounts

by Adam

Reader Brooke shared an email from Citi that she received yesterday with the long-standing American AAdvantage 30,000 offer for opening up a Citibank checking account. You can receive up to 30k AAdvantage miles based on the type of checking account you decide to sign-up for, though note that the 30k CitiGold offer requires a balance of $100k to avoid a monthly $30 charge. The new offers can be accessed here with the code listed in the graphic below or by calling the 1-800 number or visiting a branch. Note that the email states that the offer “is not transferable”, however shared codes have worked often in the past with the same T&Cs, YMMV.

Now, there are several requirements so be sure to check out this Flyertalk post for answers and experience from others. There also seems to be a delay in the posting of some miles and some have had to contact Citi in order to get their miles posted. If you currenlty have any Citibank checking product, you are not eligible for the promotion (though you can cancel the account and sign-up later).  Post 155 from texasguy77 does a good job of answering some of the more common questions:

I have read the last few pages of the thread – but need to clarify a few points before I sign up.

1. So online transfers of funds from other banks (Bank of America) or Fidelity accounts will count as direct deposits – is that correct? CORRECT

2. To get the 30K AA miles, does the Direct deposits have to be for a certain dollar amount? (I realize that there is a $30 monthly fee for the Gold acct if balance is not $50K) NO MINIMUM DIRECT DEPOSIT REQUIREMENT

3. How long must the direct deposit funds remain with Citibank? NO REQUIREMENT – NEEDS TO POST AND AFFECT YOUR BALANCE

4. For the debit purchases of $750, just choose the “credit” option instead of debit option at payment – is that correct? I CHOSE CREDIT, OTHERS HAVE DONE DEBIT AND GOT MILES

5. Like the idea of purchasing a money order at Walmart (of course, depends on the fee). So has this be acceptable to meet the debit purchase of $750 for the offer? YES

6. Since there is a long delay in getting the account info, checks, and debit card when opening an account online, should I just go into a branch in person to open such an account – is this an option? If not, does Citibank adjust the “60 day from account opening” if you notify them when the materials are not received for several weeks. YOU CAN GO TO BRANCH TO OPEN ACCOUNT, TAKE OFFER CODE WITH YOU

watch out for 1099-INT at $.025 per mile. So you may end up having to pay taxes of up to $750 for this offer. Back in 2010, Citibank sent out 1099-INT forms for opening up bank accounts, I believe they did this in 2011 as well. Do some additional search on Flyertalk regarding this topic.

Cheers,

Some on FT stated this shouldn’t create a 1099, and some stated they did not get a 1099 in 2012. But I’m still curious about it. I tried signing up online but the website is screwed up today so my app didn’t process; maybe a good thing.

Not worth it.

I used a different code, however it never asked for my AA FF#. This is most likely only geared toward present Citibank card holders. Will wait to see what happens when I get materials.
