United to Fly 3 Class 777-200 on IAD-HNL Route, Note 3 Class Award Pricing

United will switch from the current legacy CO 767-400ER aircraft to a United 3 class Boeing 777 on the Washington Dulles (IAD) to Honolulu (HNL) route for select dates in August and December of this year. The changes will take place for HNL based flights beginning August 13th and will last through August 27th. Service will also switch from daily to 5x weekly during this time. Operating aircraft will switch once again to a 3 class 777 from December 19th – January 6th.

If you are looking for awards, do note that United will be charging the normal first class award price (50,000 each way) for a United Global First seat on the 777. A United BusinessFirst seat on the 767-400 costs only 40,000 each way and has essentially the same width and recline as the United Global First seat plus the savings of 10,000 miles each way. However, the 777 United Global First seat will give you a significantly larger seat pitch and is a much smaller cabin.

For comparison’s sake, the 767-400 United BusinessFirst seat on the route has a 55″ seat pitch, 21″ width, and 180 degree recline. The United BusinessFirst 767-400 cabin on the route has 39 seats configured in a 2-1-2 layout. The 3 class 777 on the route will have United Global First seats with a 78″ seat pitch, 21″ width, and 180 degree recline. The United Global First cabin is also smaller with only 12 seats configured in a 1-2-1 layout. Perhaps more importantly, the United BusinessFirst seats on the 777 will not be lie-flat. They’ll have a 55″ seat pitch, 20.5″ width, and a 14″ recline in a cabin of 49 seats but will cost the same 40,000 miles. There is plenty of Economy Saver availability if you are looking for an award flight to HNL in August but not so much in December.

All things to take into consideration if you are planning on booking an award flight to HNL in August or December of this year…

  1. How many PMUA “old config” 772s remain??? I thought all of them were finally updated with the lie-flat config. Ex-IAD is a loooooong flight sitting in those old and beatdown Barcalounger seats.
