Qatar Airways Flight Attendants Must Seek Permission for Marriage & Inform of Pregnancy

It’s been a busy month for negative crew news coming out of the Middle East. Aero Galactic is reporting that Qatar Airways flight attendants must seek permission from Qatar management before getting married.

According to the International Transport Worker’s Federation, a standard hiring contract for the airline’s female workers reads: “You are required to obtain prior permission from the company, in case you wish to change your marital status and get married. The airline also mandates that women tell a supervisor if they become pregnant — and could face termination if they fail to do so. “The employee shall notify the employer in case of pregnancy from the date of her knowledge of its occurrence. The employer shall have the right to terminate the contract of employment from the date of notification of the pregnancy. Failure of employee to notify the employer or the concealment of the occurrence shall be considered a breach of contract.”

  1. As far as I know, you are fired immediately if you get pregnant and are single at Emirates unless this policy has changed in the last four years.

  2. I believe they are government owned, correct? If so, then this makes sense considering the countries policies. I wonder what implications there are in the culture with getting married and/or pregnant. It could shed an overarching light on such a policy.

  3. @Rick – No offence, but please spare us the false outrage…You hate yourself, but you won’t cancel your booking. Why bother even commenting?

I bet no one cancels any bookings because of this! We love the ME (and Asian) airlines becausee they provide what all the others have forgotten about – service.

These are all government owned/backed airlines from countries with pretty backward labor laws (if any) and cultures where being pregnant out of wedlock or being gay are culturally and socially unacceptable.

Anyone really surprised that they have to ask for permission to get married? Have you ever been to a Muslim country? Yeah, I didn’t think so…and no one really cares as long as they serve Krug or Dom so let’s not pretend to be offended.

  4. @ Stephan I cant cancel since its a non-refundable fare. But what I would do is avoid using it again.
No amount of rant would make any difference, the dollars will.
As you said I do lover the Krug and the nice service, but definitely wouldn’t like to have my dollars going to a company like that.
Its definitely easy (and comfortable) looking the other way but taking small steps towards doing the right thing isnt that hard. But I will definitely try.

  5. lets all keep supporting the whacked out terrorists and not support our best friend living to the north of us who want to ship us ‘friendly’ oil from a true democracy

  6. u didn’t like my comment about terrorists? where do they come from? the middle east with archaic laws and traditions that suppress human right and especially womens…

  7. Please someone tell the actual policy in QR. Whether you can leave at any point without paying them any amount of money? If so how long is it mandatory to stay with them?
