Update – BA “You’re Too Fat to Fly” – Swiss & Air France Offer Rides

by Adam

Here’s an update to the post from this weekend titled – British Airways – “You’re Too Fat to Fly”, in which British Airways informed a French family that their son was too fat to fly home from Chicago (ORD) to France via London (LHR).

The entire family including the 500 pound son have now made it safely to New York City from Chicago via Amtrak, arriving at Penn Station yesterday afternoon. They spent a week at a hotel in Chicago trying to work on travel options with British Airways to no avail. They plan to leave next Tuesday aboard the Queen Mary 2, sailing from New York to Southampton on a one week voyage across the Atlantic.

As the AFP reports, even the train ride seemed to be a big to do:

As he arrived in New York, with the help of the French consulate, police and staff from the rail company Amtrak helped him off the train and out of the station. On Tuesday, his father said their travel agent said Air France and Swissair were willing to take him. But the family was out of money. “We paid $1,200 for the train and then $2,000 for the ship. We cannot pay any more,” Rene Chenais said. “For now Kevin has to hang in there. We are going to try to visit New York a bit and disconnect,” Chenais senior said. A doctor will examine Chenais in the coming days, and staff on the Queen Mary 2 have been friendly, the father said.
