US Airways Passenger Note War – Ends with a Slap!

by Adam

Amazing! Have you read the notes from the passenger war that erupted on a US Airways flight that ended with a slap on Thanksgiving? From ABC News:

Gale, who is a producer for the ABC network shows “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” initially started tweeting about a female passenger identified as “Diane.” Before the flight even boarded, Gale started to tweet that she was complaining about the delay. Initially Gale seemed content to write about the woman, who was complaining about possibly missing her connection, on his Twitter feed. But then Gale heard the woman snap at a flight attendant. After the flight took off, Gale decided to deliver a message by having the flight attendant bring the woman a drink with a chastising note. According to Gale, the woman did not appear to appreciate the note which read in part, “It has come to my attention that today is your Thanksgiving!! It must be hard to not be with your family! Please accept this glass of wine. It is a gift from me to you. Hopefully if you drink it, you won’t be able to use your mouth to talk. Love Elan”. After overhearing the woman angrily complain to the flight attendant, Gale left two bottles of vodka on her tray himself. She responded with a note of her own. Gale wrote that the woman was so infuriated by his final note, she hit him. US Airways said it was investigating the possible incident and talking to crew members.

Check out the full twitter account of the events below…and for the record Diane missed her connection!

“I know I can come across as abrasive. I know I can seem harsh. But what I’ve never done is be unkind to a person in a service position.”  “I don’t care what’s going on with you: Don’t be rude to people who are doing their job.”

I skimmed the exchange but Gale comes off as a schmuck to me. If you want the end result to be the woman acting nicer, show her some compassion instead of sarcasm. If you were in such a bad mood, would someone’s sarcasm help you snap out of it?
Diane is right: I feel sorry for Gale’s family if that’s how he treats them when they are in a bad mood.

Apparently the woman has stage 4 lung cancer. Not funny anymore. And even indepedently of that, his words constitute sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment? She doesn’t work for him, Sue Anne. Otherwise, I challenge you to show me where in Federal statutes (the governing law in the air) this is a crime.

Sorry I found it kind of funny. I’m sure the folks around Diane would have liked to actually say what Elan did (minus the eat my d____). Sometimes people are jerks in public, but I don’t see the exchange rising to to any level of crime. After all, Diane didn’t have to respond.

This Elan guy is a douchebag. A for how he acts and B for tweeting about it.
If I were his boss, I would fire him… Oh wait, is he in a guild of union workers where they can act like asses all along without consequences?

It’s obvious everyone was frustrated and this is how they acted out…the holidays! Yes it was inappropriate of Elan, but not a violation of the law. However, getting slapped is an assault!

Inappropriate actions all around! Responding to people being jerks by being a jerk is really not the solution. Yes, it’s tempting to be snarky, and yes, it might be funny, but it makes things, not better. Just because she’s discourteous to service personnel (which is definitely very not cool) doesn’t negate the fact that she’s a human being who should also be treated with respect and dignity. And likewise, her treatment of the flight attendants and gate personnel, and the slap, were also inappropriate (the latter also being the crime of assault and battery).

Well, i don’t know about America, but i live in Scandinavia where his words would not be tolerated AT ALL and action would be taken. And over here, sexual harassment is not confined to the workplace (thankfully!). It would certainly not pass off as a ‘joke’. Slapping him was of course wrong and way out of line but the guy was a douche that was out for a passive aggressive mental battle with Diane from the get go. How did he help the situation by telling her to ‘eat my dick?’ Seriously?? She was horrible to deal with, he simply made it worse.
