United Completes Transcon 757 Renov – Comparing to AA & DL Upgrades

by Adam

For us airline obsessed types we’ve known that the project was working towards completion for some time, however yesterday United officially announced the end of an extensive redesign of 15 Boeing 757-200s that fly the p.s. “Premium Service” routes, bringing flat-bed seats to every scheduled transcontinental flight between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and San Francisco and between New York JFK and Los Angeles.

From the PR release:

The revamped p.s. aircraft offer 28 180-degree flat-bed United BusinessFirst seats, offering up to 6’4″ of sleeping space and more room for storage; 42 extra-legroom United Economy Plus seats; and 72 United Economy seats. Designed to give customers an experience comparable to long-haul, international flights, United’s refurbished p.s. aircraft also offer:

  • Inflight Wi-Fi
  • Personal, on-demand entertainment at every seat – with 15.4″ monitors in United BusinessFirst and 9″ monitors in United Economy – offering hundreds of movies and television shows, plus other entertainment options
  • Power outlets and USB ports at every seat
  • Two additional inches of legroom in United Economy Plus compared to Economy Plus legroom on pre-renovation p.s. service
  • Multi-course meals in United BusinessFirst on most flights
  • Wine selections recommended by Doug Frost, United’s Master Sommelier and Master of Wine, including half bottles of premium wines for purchase in United Economy

“Our investment in these aircraft and in the p.s. service will add greatly to our flyer-friendly customer experience on these coast-to-coast flights,” said Jeff Foland, United’s executive vice president of marketing, technology and strategy.

As a big fan of the UA PS flights, I have to wonder exactly how this is an improvement to the pmUA PS flights? Basically it’s a CO 757 intl 757 layout. Looking at the new AA 321 plan reminds me of what the UA PS flight layout used to look like….
So UA…please tell me how this new improved cabin layout is better than the old product…???

@Andrew, having flown both old and new products on the PS multiple times in the last few months (and when it was the old one, I was sitting in F), the new BF has a much better seat than the old F, the power port is actually able to feed a laptop, and you have a big TV screen instead of a tiny portable player which you don’t get until you are above 10k.

Must be a dispiriting job being United’s Master Sommelier and Master of Wine.
Master Sommelier: “Hey Jeff there is this great wine that United remaining high value costumers would love”
Jeff: “what can we find for 50 cents a bottle…?”
Master Sommelier: “why did I leave army catering college”

Currently Flying JFK-LAX to Connect to Emirates First A380 LAX-DXB! - Point Me To The Plane December 9, 2013 - 4:11 pm

[…] As you read this I’m flying across the country from JFK-LAX on United for 12,500 miles in Economy Comfort in order to connect to my first ever Emirates First Class A380-800 flight! I’ll be flying from LAX – Dubai later tonight. Why the additional flight when Emirates has two daily flights to Dubai from JFK…and there was award availability in Business? Simple, I wanted to experience Emirates First on the A380 with private suites and in-flight shower, take the 3rd longest flight in the world (no more EWR-SIN or LAX-SIN), and 12.5K miles extra to do all that seemed reasonable enough. Plus I’ll get to sample the new Economy Comfort – United Completes Transcon 757 Renov – Comparing to AA & DL Upgrades. […]
