Top 10 Travel Scams to Look Out For

Keeping with today’s day of lists, here are the “Top 10 Travel Scams to Look Out For” courtesy of Budget Travel. Travel + Leisure did a similar list of the World’s Worst Travel Scams. Between the two, I’d say most of the known scams are covered though I don’t see the Beijing Tea Scam on either list. I’ve been pretty lucky as in all my travels I’ve only had people try the “Bangkok Palace Closure” and the “Beijing Tea Scam” on me, though I knew about both before arriving in those countries. Any others missing from the lists?

  1. I had the fraudsters call my hotel room asking for my credit card. I almost fell for it but went downstairs to the desk to clear up the issue and of course there was no issue. They tried to call back as I was standing at the front desk and said they were my brother or cousin. Have to be on your toes sometimes.

  2. I’ve fallen for scams similar to the “Palace Closure” at different sites in Indonesia as a domestic tourist, so yeah, scams are everywhere (i] claiming that a guide was needed to go down a hiking path and ii] claiming a guide was needed to see snakes at Uluwatu Temple, when the snakes were in a plastic bag placed in a crevice). Also, my sister had her pocket picked at the Place de la Concorde in Paris through the swarm trick, but she got her wallet back by challenging the pickpocket. She was also helped by the fact that her friends came to her aid in time.
