Trip Report – Asiana Airlines Business Class BKK-ICN A330-300

by Adam

This is part eleven of a thirteen part trip report from my third and most recent trip back to Thailand and includes my first Asiana flight – Bangkok (BKK) to Seoul (ICN) on an A330-300:

This was not only my first Asiana flight, but the 5 hour and 35 minute flight was also the hottest flight I’ve ever been on. More on that below…

On the left you can see the boarding line for non business passengers, on the right, the calmer business area:

Friendly and smiley service began right away with drinks (offered multiple times), menus, and a personal greeting…

The seat was of the older pod style variety, though it did have a small cubby and an outlet. You can see from the pictures that the plane was extremely clean though, I think the carpet was probably one of the cleanest I’ve ever seen on a commercial jet.

As mentioned above, the service was stellar. Hot towels were offered three separate times – before dinner, after dinner, and prior to landing. In addition, a flight attendant cleaned the bathroom after EACH AND EVERY passenger use…WOW!

Dinner time – my Korean option was very good!

The TVs were a bit older as well (especially the remote), but there were still multiple movie choices and noise canceling headphones.

Almost fully flat… sleeping was definitely the most difficult part on this overnight flight. It actually wasn’t only because of the seat, but more so because of the heat. I’m not joking when I say the temperature must have been set to 80F or higher. It was an oven and there was absolutely no A/C. Now, since the service was so stellar, there were flight attendants walking up and down the aisles every 5 mintues or so. Any time they passed by and saw that I was still up, they asked if there was anything they could do. I asked about the temperature and was told that the A/C is not turned on during the overnight flights as “local” passengers get too cold but not to worry as heat is not turned on either. Hmm, I’m not exactly sure what she meant by that. At least she continuously brought me new water bottles.

Even though I would have loved a fully-flat seat for this overnight flight, I have to say that the service was some of the best I’ve ever received and the food was excellent as well. Maybe bring your own portable fan though?

I have a thing about not having a/c, anywhere in the world you should have a/c for when it is hot, even if it is rarely so, on the plane and in any vehicle you should have a/c telling me that the locals find it too cold so you do not turn on the a/c is total BS. So what if the locals, prefer taking a dump on newspapers on the floor like in China we should allow that as well? We are not animals…. jeeez… so any airline that does that, is not worth flying EVER.

I also get frustrated with the heating – which would have to be on at that temp!

I would suggest getting a bag of ice, putting it in the foot cubby. Sleep.
