World’s Safest Airlines List – 2015 Edition

While you might think 2014 was a bad year for airline safety, the rate of accidents was actually a record low – one for every 1.3 million flights. Of those accidents, 21 (a historical record) were fatal claiming 986 lives, higher than the 10 year average. MH370 and MH17 accounted for 537 of the 986 lost lives. The world’s airlines last year carried a record 3.3 billion passengers on 27 million flights. 50 years ago there were 87 crashes killing 1,597 when airlines carried only 141 million passengers.

So who are the safest airlines? Qantas once again is #1 (and has been since the list kicked off in 2013) with their fatality-free record in the jet era. The others in the top 10 include:

  • Cathay Pacific
  • British Airways
  • Emirates
  • Etihad
  • EVA Air
  • Finnnair
  • Lufthansa
  • Singapore Airlines

The safest low cost carriers?

  • Aer Lingus
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Icelandair
  • Jetstar
  • Jetblue
  • Monarch Airlnes
  • Thomas Cook
  • TUI Fly
  • Westjet

…and the least safe

  • Agni Air (Nepal)
  • Kam Air (Afghanistan)
  • Nepal Airlines (Nepal)
  • Tara Air (Nepal)
  • SCAT (Kazakhstan)
