20% Back on Hyatt Points Redemptions – Cheaper than Pre-Devaluation!

Hyatt has launched a new promotion for Hyatt Credit Cardmembers! Starting today, when you redeem Hyatt points for a free night stay, a points + cash stay, a suite upgrade, or dining/spa expenses at Hyatt properties, you will receive 20% of the points back into your account.

This is the current Hyatt award chart.

Under this promotion, after you get 20% back, the effective redemption rates are as follow:

This is a tremendous promotion if you are a Hyatt credit cardmember, considering at all categories (except 7), the effective redemption rates are cheaper than before the devaluation a little over a year ago.

Among them, Points + Cash awards are one of the popular redemption options, since they effectively allow you to buy half the points to fulfill an award stay that counts towards elite qualification—you do need to call Hyatt to check for availability, and not all hotels participate. However, under this promotion, only the “points” portion gives 20% back (i.e. the “cash” part is not discounted), so you will be spending more money per point.

Let’s compare the value you get on the “cash” part when you redeem points + cash awards.

I want to highlight categories 1 and 7, because when you redeem Points + Cash awards with the promotion, you are paying 2.5 cents per point, which is not so great of a value, considering Hyatt sells points at 2.4 cents a piece.

Note that since this is a “points back” instead of “points off” promotion, you do need to have the adequate amount of points in your account for a standard rate redemption. The 20% will be posted back to your account 4 – 6 weeks after the stay. Some other fine print:

  • You must have been a Hyatt credit cardmember at the end of January.
  • You must register for this promotion by March 31st, 2015.
  • You have to book AND complete your stay before July 31, 2015.

Hyatt Credit cardmembers can register for the promotion here.

If you have a trip in mind and hold the Hyatt credit card, this is a great opportunity to make good use of your Hyatt points! For example, you can stay at the Hyatt Regency Tokyo at just 9,600 points after 20% back!

  2. Getting the same error message and I am a Hyatt card holder as well. 🙁 Maybe I will get an email for the offer…hopefully…crossing fingers!

  3. Is this for booking made after today or prior award bookings? I have one that can’t be rebooked. I got the email but can’t find the T&C.

  4. As far as I know, this is not a targeted offer, and that all Hyatt credit cardmembers are eligible (provided that they have been card holders at least since 1/31/15). Hyatt should be able to register you over the phone. As long as your stay falls between 2/17 and 7/31, you should get the rebate (i.e. no need to rebook!)

  5. Comparing to an award redemption is one comparison, but if you need the stay credit, then comparing to a paid stay makes more sense. For instance, a $100 stay at a cat 1 would cost $100 plus taxes or $50 plus 2k points plus half taxes. In cases like that, the 2k points saves you more than $50,which is a good deal, I think.
