LGA Update Begins – United & DL Hangars Torn Down for New Central Terminal Building

The first baby step in the delayed Central Terminal Building (CTB) redevelopment at LaGuardia has begun! The Port Authority of NY & NJ (PANYNJ) last week kicked off the demolition of hangars 2 and 4. The two buildings were over 70 years old and located between the current CTB and Delta’s C and D terminals. Hangar 2 has displayed the “Delta Air Lines” and “United Airlines” logos for decades, but hasn’t actually been used by either of those airlines in years.

The PANYNJ provided these reasons for tearing down the hangars (which was originally scheduled to begin in Q1 2014) at a cost of $22.9 million:

  1. Given how long the union contractors will take it will be the next century before the new terminal opens but it’s a start

    • Why the snarky attack on “union contractors”? Municipal projects like these take a very long time in NYC and Organized Labor has NOTHING to do with it.
We are in a 24/7 living city. We want the roads repaired without being closed, a new subway built without interrupting train service (or closing the streets) and we want a new airport built while still flying out of the old one.
The logistics involved with doing these is staggering and if you are not involved in actually making it happen, you would never know or appreciate it.
Your comment reeks of this ignorance.

  2. Thank you for the information. I’ve always enjoyed the classic buildings and saw them being torn down when I was at LGA for a flight this morning. I posted some pics on my blog and linked to yours!
