ClickHole Nails the “True Secrets” for Saving on Airfare

by Enoch

Popular media likes to do posts on “how to save money on plane tickets,” and they are usually not talking mistake fares like the ones you would see here. Instead, they are talking about tips to actually save you money on tickets you plan to purchase anyway.

Maybe it’s just me, but I find these posts to usually contain “tips” that are either extremely outdated (you know…like dress up to get upgraded to First Class) or just unfounded (book on Tuesdays at 3 pm). Some tips are true, but are best filed in the “duh” category. Seriously…everyone knows flexibility will likely yield you cheaper fares.

This is why I absolutely love the post ClickHole just did on “Secrets for Saving Money on Your Next Plane Ticket.” For those of you unfamiliar, ClickHole is sort of like the satire of BuzzFeed, owned by the same group as The Onion. Here are some highlights of their tips on getting cheap airfares:

Buy a ticket for a land plane: Travel websites won’t tell you this, but tickets for planes that go on the road or travel on train tracks are often cheaper than tickets for planes that go in the air.

Let your airline know that your heart belongs to the skies: If you write “My Heart Belongs To The Skies” on your boarding pass, airlines will let you fly for free, because it’s technically against the law for airlines to stop people from following their heart.

Buy your ticket directly from the pilot: Tickets get insanely marked up by travel and airline sites. Cut out the middleman and buy your ticket directly from your pilot to save big and avoid getting scammed.

What are your favorite secrets for getting cheap airfares?

Use DeAndre Levy’s trick to find the cheapest seat (with the best view) on the plane. Of course your companion will have to ride on the other wing.
