The key value point here is to use a card that gets 5 points per dollar at office supply stores, like the Chase Ink.  Additionally, if you click through the Chase Ultimate Rewards shopping portal first, you can get an extra 2 points per dollar, for a total of 7.  That’s 630 UR points for a $100 gift card at 10% off with free shipping.

Just curious is to why the disclaimer stating that gift card purchases are not eligible, as well as all the many confirmed reports in the last year that gift card purchases are not paid out on the UR portal in Staples.com purchases, do not apply in this situation?

“Not eligible on gift cards, gift certificates or any other similar cash equivalents including third party gift cards sold by Staples.com”

Great question. While gift cards are general excluded by the T&Cs, many merchants do indeed pay out for gift cards. Not sure if this is a glitch or if they just can’t track the difference. I can’t speak for the experience of others, but I DID receive a portal bonus for a gift card purchase through Staples.com as recently as last month, so its certainly worth the shot. Sears is another one that regularly does give the bonus for gift cards.
