Virgin Australia Business Award Availability Wide Open w/ SkyMiles in Feb!

by Adam

Here’s some good Delta news for once…business class on Virgin Australia (considered by most as one of the best redemption opportunities using SkyMiles) is now available for some prime months! Availability has been a bit stingier than prior years, but almost the entire month of February is now open…some days with up to 4 or more business class seats. Since this is a partner award, it prices at the low level -> 80K miles each way. There is sporadic availability in December, January, and March as well.

The difficult part will be getting to LAX while maintaining low level pricing. I’ve booked numerous awards for Juicy Miles clients this morning and it hasn’t been impossible…though it’s a challenge.

Method 1 -> using Alaska partner flights (First Class on Alaska, Business on Virgin), total price remains 80K:

Delta Low

Method 2 -> using low level Delta economy flights to connect in LAX, total price remains 80K:

Delta Low2 Econ

Method 3 -> painful multiple connections w/ long layovers, if flying from NYC, here’s a few that tend to have a tiny bit more availability than others – NYC-MCI-LAX, NYC-LAS-LAX, NYC-PDX-LAX.  Remember, a schedule change of “90” minutes or more will allow you to switch to direct or more convenient flights.  This far out, the chances of this occurring are not all that unlikely.

Method 4 -> find your own way to LAX.  Certainly frustrating, but any value we can score from Delta at this point is a +…

Return availability isn’t nearly as generous, though you can find days with availability.  Otherwise looks for China Eastern, China Southern, and Korean connections pricing at 80K.
