Did an NFL Running Back Maximize His Credit Card Points Earnings?

A well known tradition in the NFL is to haze rookies during training camp.  San Francisco 49ers running back Mike Davis recently learned exactly what that means, tweeting out a picture of his restaurant bill.  According to rumors, the group went to one of Chef Michael Mina’s restaurants in the Bay Area and saddled Mike with the $1878.59 bill.  If you look carefully at the receipt below, you will see the Michael Mina’s Twitter account printed.

Since there have been recent incidents in the NFL that relate to one teammate owing another some money, I wonder if Mike consoled with the fact that he recently signed an NFL contract worth $435,000 this year, with a $468,781 signing bonus, or if knowing that he was able to earn 2x the points for dining out on his Chase Sapphire credit card made him feel better.  It really is a shame that Mike didn’t manage to convince the team to head out to dinner on the first Friday of the month (at least until the end of 2015!).  He could have earned 5637 Ultimate Rewards points (worth about $110), instead of only 3758 Ultimate Rewards points (worth about $75)!

Seeing as how his fridge is loaded with Lunchables, and not much else, you have to figure that he is the kind of guy that would mind his money and care about the extra Ultimate Rewards points he could have earned!

Splitting the Check

This whole Mike Davis incident made me think about the number of times that I have offered to put the entire restaurant bill on one of my credit cards when heading out to dinner with friends so that I could maximize my points earnings!  Forget the split check – load it up on my _____ (insert credit card needing to meet a minimum spend here).

What do you do when you dine out with friends?

  1. Well, if they were at Mina’s Bourbon Steak in the Westin SF SF, then he could have earned 5 SPG pts/$ spent (3 SPG Gold plus 2 SPG AX) without even staying there.
