Barclays Launches 30,000 AA Miles Spend Promotion for Existing Cardmembers

by Adam

For years, Barclays has offered 15,000 bonus miles for spending $500 or $750 every month for 3 months after a period of inactivity on the US Airways / AAdvantage Aviator Red MasterCard. Well, I now have a very similar offer, but for 30,000 bonus miles and a TON more spend over double the number of months. I received the offer despite actually using the card this year thanks to 2X and 3X spend category bonuses.

Earn 30,000 bonus miles – here’s how it works:
1) Register for this special offer by December 31, 2015
2) Spend $2,500 or more on purchases using your AAdvantage® Aviator™ Red MasterCard® each month from December 2015 through May 2016 and earn 30,000 bonus miles
3) Plan your next getaway – once you’ve earned your 30,000 bonus miles, they will be awarded in July 2016 and you will be able to redeem them for exciting adventures just a few days after that

Besides the much higher required spend of $15,000, this may interfere with canceling your card. Remember, Barclays only refunds the annual fee within 60 days after the charge hits your statement.

Offer is valid for select cardmembers and is not transferable. Qualified cardmembers who activate by December 31, 2015 will earn 30,000 bonus miles after you charge $2,500 or more in net retail purchases (purchases that are not returned or rescinded) each calendar month from December 1, 2015 through May 31, 2016. If you do not spend over $2,500 in any of the 6 months of the promotion you will not be eligible for any bonus miles as part of this offer. To receive your bonus miles, your account must be open, active and in good standing. Purchases made during periods when your account is delinquent or your account is otherwise not in good standing as defined in your Credit Card Cardmember Agreement do not qualify for this offer. Your bonus miles will appear on your statement up to 6-8 weeks after the end of the promotion. Net retail purchases do not include such things as the purchase of money orders, traveler’s checks, foreign currency, lottery tickets, gambling chips, wire transfers, person-to-person money transfers or using the account to obtain a cash advance.

I got the offer, but $2500 per month for 6 months ms on a 1 pt/$ card is iffy for me — both how and why. Are 30K AA pts worth it? That’s just 3 points per dollar instead of 1. Are you really “pretty psyched”? I’m still looking for the pony. Help me understand. Thanks!

Let’s see if you do the MS route, it comes out to about $170 or so in gift card fees and then you have to liquidate at Walmart or do it through Money Orders if that’s available to you. So there is time involved. $170 for 45k miles (30k bonus + 1 mile per 15k spend) is certainly a good deal but again there is time and effort and gas and usually Walmart involved. Still 45,000 is nothing to scoff at. If you’re already swimming in AA miles, then this probably won’t appeal but otherwise why not, if you have time on your hands and BB/Serve/Kate begging for your return.
