The Easiest, Cheapest and Most Rewarding Way of Keeping Expiring Points Alive

Over the last week or so, three different people have asked me what they could do to keep expiring points or miles alive. There are a number of simply ways you can usually keep expiring miles alive, but my answer to this question is usually the same: online shopping portals.

Pretty much any major airline these days has an online shopping portal. The same applies for major hotel companies. Simply do an online search for the rewards program whose miles/points you want to keep alive accompanied by the phrase “online shopping portal”. If you do not have one, create an account with said online shopping portal. Think of an item that you need to purchase and a store that would normally sell such an item. Click on the link for said store, purchase your item and soon you will be credited with miles/points that will keep your expiring miles/points alive and reset their expiration date.

Please note that this will not work with all rewards programs as some have miles that will expire after a certain amount of time, regardless of what you do, such as Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. However, the online shopping portal strategy suggested above will work in most cases.

If you are buying something you would have purchased anyways, then chances are that it did not cost you anything to keep your expiring miles alive, plus you will be rewarded with bonus miles/points for said purchase.

Click on each of the rewards progrm listed below to access its online shopping portal:
