Last week American Airlines announced they would be introducing premium economy seats to most of their wide-bodied aircraft beginning next year. Not all premium economy products are the same, so how does American’s product stack up to the competition? Perhaps better than you think.
According to this Fox News article, at 19 inches, American’s premium economy seat width will be better than British Airways’ (18.5 in), Lufthansa’s (18-18.7 in) and some of Cathay Pacific’s PE seats (17.8-19 in). When it comes to seat pitch, American’s premium economy seats offer the same (38 in) as BA, Lufthansa (some aircraft offer 37 in), Cathay and Virgin Atlantic.
I did some additional research and, according to SeatGuru, both seat width and pitch on American’s premium economy seats will be comparable to what is offered by Singapore Airlines (19.5 in/38 in) and Air France (19 in/38 in).
Another interesting tidbit from the previously cited Fox News article is that American’s PE fares will be comparable with BA’s, which usually cost about twice as much as economy class seats.
It is good to see that American’s premium economy product will likely be as comfortable and affordable as other premium economy products. Although it will never be a substitute for business class or first class, I am eager to see how this product will look like in real-life.
