We likely all have either taken Uber before, or know someone who has taken Uber. It is now a routine part of our vocabulary, much in the way that we didn’t know what Google meant until… well, Google. Because of its incredible popularity, Uber has just hit a major milestone in terms of the number of trips that it has provided riders. Before I spoil the surprise, take a moment to guess just how many trips you think Uber has completed. To give you some help, I will remind you that Uber started in San Francisco five and a half years ago. (And the guy in the image below should be a clue too.)
That’s right, Uber just made its 1 billionth trip. That was not a typo. It just provided trip number 1,000,000,000. That’s a whole lotta zeros. In their news release, Uber wrote:
Marvin and Ara just made our day. Their £5 London uberX ride together on Christmas Eve from London Fields, Hackney to Hoxton in Ara’s blue Honda Insight Hybrid was the billionth Uber trip.
Because they hit lucky number 1 billion, Uber gave Marvin an unlimited year’s worth of free Uber rides, and gave the driver Ara a vacation on Uber. I wonder if they were ‘randomly’ selected like Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson’s not-so-random selection of traveler 1 million through the airport (Spoiler alert: It was a Delta Airlines customer).
How many trips have you taken on Uber? I recently saw on an Uber promo blog that you can use Uber Totals to tabulate your ride history. Let’s just say compared to some on their leaderboard (3,900+ rides?!?), I have contributed far fewer rides to 1 billion than other riders!

Cool tool – I have only taken 73 rides. Way less than the 3900 someone took. Living in NYC with so many taxi options (sometimes I use Lyft and sometimes I just hail), it would be cool to know man taxi rides I’ve had using various services.

“Only” 73 is still a lot! I always wonder how many of those rides you (or Uber riders, in general) would have actually taken had Uber/Lyft not existed.
