Best Use for Old Amenity Kits Ever! How Many Do You Have Lying Around?

by Adam

I was cleaning out a closet of amenity kits and airline pajamas (yes, a full closet) and began thinking whether these might be useful to someone.  The bags themselves could clearly still be used as well as some of the toiletries inside.  I contacted a local charity and took them through the contents of each amenity kit. They were particularly interested in the pajamas, socks, slippers, shaving products and razors, sealed combs and brushes, lotions, and toothpaste.  For the toothpaste, they asked me to go through each bag and remove the expired products as well as those that would be expiring in the next 90 days.  They then sent me a shipping label and asked me to ship them the kits and pajamas.  Wow, so easy and they were very excited to receive them!

Here’s a sample of just two of the nine piles I made of these kits, picture one includes domestic airlines while picture two is international carriers.  These date back to about 2003. Note all the different Delta varieties throughout the years (most present day Tumi kits had already been donated unopened and sealed). In total, I had an astounding 57 Delta kits.  How about those Continental BusinessFirst kits in the top left hand corner of the first pic…many of those are from 2007-2009 when Continental had so many more non-stop flights from EWR to European destinations than Delta did at JFK.  The majority of PJs were thanks to Emirates, Singapore, and Qantas. Miles memories…

Readers, this was so easy and I cleared out an entire closet. Why not contact your local charity and ask them if they would be interested in some pajamas and amenity kits?

Good idea to spread the word. I too have about 50 kits and various pajamas and dozens of slippers. The homeless shelter is a good place to ask if they would want them. You’d be surprised at how picky charities are (hint: most want cash (no checks, credit cards, but hard cash – and I don’t given those folks a nickel). Demands by charities are sometimes over the top. Some want to see the receipt of purchase! Some want only newly purchased items, wrapped, sealed and in a bag. Some will only take certain brand merchandise. To them I say good luck. Rather would roll down my window and give a guy standing on the street asking for money on skid row the kit.
