Oops – Emirates Confuses New York City with San Francisco!

by Eric

Let’s hope that the pilots working for Emirates happen to know the difference between New York City and San Francisco when they are flying.  In Italy, an advertisement for the Dubai-based carrier’s route from Milan to New York’s JFK Airport was placed in a metro station.  Unfortunately for Emirates, if an eager traveler wished to see the bridge featured in the advertisement, they would have to fly to SFO instead!

Twitter user @MGrace86 noticed this humorous ad agency error and posted it.  Presumably, Emirates was hoping to capture the beauty of the Brooklyn Bridge (which a traveler would be able to see, should they arrive at JFK), but made a little error along the way.  In case you forgot what each bridge looks like, you can refer below for a quick visual reminder!

Maybe they were picturing the George Washington Bridge, Verazano Narrows Bridge, Whitestone Bridge or Throggs Neck Bridge? All suspension bridges similar to the Golden Gate. The latter two in the list visible on the approach into JFK…

Perhaps not an error, but obviously none of the bridges are as iconic as, say, the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty for NYC as the Golden Gate Bridge is for San Francisco.

You are quite optimistic! I somehow doubt the Emirates’ ad agency thought a random Italian tourist would recognize the Throggs Neck. Heck, I doubt most New Yorkers would recognize a silhouette of the Throggs Neck!

I was optmistic thinking about the Verrazano… but just because I have run the NYC Marathon and for runners that was an Icon. For regular tourists I doubt it.
