His In-Flight Concert Caused 5 Jet Airways Crew Suspensions

by Eric

How many of us have thought of how cool it would be to be on the same flight with a celebrity?  Well, during a chartered Jet Airways flight from Jodhpur to Mumbai, India on January 4, you not only had the opportunity to sit next to a Bollywood star, but he also performed an impromptu concern over the in-flight announcement system.

According to reports, all passengers on board knew each other and requested that Bollywood celebrity Sonu Nigam sing a few songs.  The singer obliged and sang two songs — Do pal ruka from Yash Raj Films’ Veer Zaara and Panchhi nadiya from Abhishek Bachchan’s launch movie, Refugee.

Videos of the singer crooning in air were posted on social media by some flyers and went viral.  Imagine having your favorite singer jamming out in the middle of a flight!

Unfortunately, the story does not end there.  The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India was concerned that the flight attendants had allowed a passenger to take over the in-flight announcement system.  The DGCA investigated the incident and asked the airline to suspend the flight attendants who were on board.  Jet Airways indicated:

“All cabin crew on the flight have been taken off flight duty for enquiry and corrective training to reinforce strict adherence to operating procedures.”

The singer in the middle of the controversy has fired back, saying:

“To suspend crew members for asking me to sing on the address system, when the seat-belt signs were off, and no announcements were to be made, is nothing less than punishing someone for spreading happiness.”

Of course, the Internet had a field day with this kind of an event.

This makes me question if the situation has anything to do with AI being State-owned while Jet is not, yet offers a much better product. We seem to hear horror stories every few weeks about the myriad, dangerous shenanigans in which AI routinely engages but with little or no response from the Indian government. Then this happens on the privately-owned competitor and all of a sudden Jet Airways is unsafe and employees are to be reprimanded.
