Missing MH370 Only 4 Months Away from Becoming Aviation’s Biggest Unsolved Mystery

by Adam

If no new clues are discovered between now and the end of June, four ships currently searching the seas off western Australia will likely terminate their efforts. The search bill has so far totaled $130 million and only one component has turned up, a wing flap on Reunion Island, thousands of miles from the search area. The ships have completed searching most spots in the likely impact area, but have come up empty handed. Those ships are now rechecking “hot spot” areas where experts agree wreckage is most likely to be found. Meanwhile, families of the missing say they will fight to keep search efforts alive past June.

BloombergBusiness takes a look at the search process to date, complications that have kept MH370 one of aviation’s biggest mysteries, and where the search goes from here.

It remains baffling to me, why airlines weren’t INSISTING on automatic position reporting every 15 minutes, some decades ago. Air France 447 should have made it clear it was needed. And yet they did nothing.
