Earlier this month, China’s State Council said that going forward it will not allow the construction of “bizarre” and “odd-shaped” buildings which lack character and cultural heritage. The Council says that buildings should be “economic, green, and beautiful.”
China has attracted some of the world’s most popular architects as the country has experienced a building boom over the last decade. More often than not, the architects have gone with eye-catching monuments including the “tea pot” pictured below, CCTV’s “big pants”, and even the “Starship Enterprise”.
One local architecture firm is for the change:
“The guidelines pretty much point to a positive direction, particularly in China where there are so many buildings completed to stand out, without considering their function.”
