Emirates Officially Cancels Planned Panama City Launch

In August of last year, Emirates shocked the travel industry by announcing service from its home base of Dubai to Panama City. This new route, which was originally scheduled to begin operating on February 1, 2016, would be the longest non-stop route in the world. Then in January, we learned that the DXB-PTY route had been delayed and would now start operating on March 31, 2016. In what is perhaps the least surprising travel development of the year, Emirates has now cancelled the DXB-PTY route according to AirlineRoute.net.

I am sure Emirates would have loved to bring this route to life, but even they cannot fly almost completely empty planes, particularly on such a long route, and that is what was happening here. There was simply not enough demand for this route, even with a codeshare agreement with Copa.

At least for Emirates it looks like they had no trouble launching their Dubai-Auckland route.
