Uber/Lyft Riders Are Surprisingly High Maintenance

Since Uber’s launch in 2009, and to a lesser extent Lyft’s launch in 2012, the way we travel has changed dramatically. For many of us, waiting more than a few minutes for an on-demand vehicle to arrive to shuttle us to our destination is met with impatience and frustration. I know that I am guilty of wondering out loud “where is my ride – the estimate was for 6 minutes, and it’s already been 10!”.

Recently, riders in Austin, Texas were faced with the news that Uber and Lyft have decided to leave the market because they were not willing to cooperate with proposed regulations that would have required fingerprinting of drivers, among other things.

Faced with having to live without Uber and Lyft, rider feedback was nothing short of shocking given that Austin has only had Uber for approximately 2.5 years.

“Uber is my crutch, extremely convenient. I didn’t know how to function without Uber, I had five meetings today,” said a female visitor from Houston.

I can understand not knowing how to function without water or food… but Uber!?!

  1. I almost never do as for me it’s generally less convenient than a rental car or cable. I’ve used it in a few specific situations where it was easier than dealing with cabs and a rental car made no sense.
