TripAdvisor: The Most Affordable Places to Travel 2016 in US/World

by Eric

Everyone always wants to see if they can maximize how far their dollar goes when they travel for vacation. To help, TripAdvisor just released their annual TripIndex Cities cost-comparison study.

travel-expensive

The index compared the cost of a 3 night trip during the peak summer travel period (June-September) in 39 tourist cities around the world. They factored in costs associated with travel for 2 people, including a 4-star hotel, a visit to 3 different attractions, lunch and dinner every day, and within city taxi travel.

In the United States, the most affordable place to travel was New Orleans, LA, while the most expensive was Orlando, FL.

Internationally, the least expensive destination was Hanoi, Vietnam, while the most expensive was Tokyo, Japan. Overall, Asian destinations offered the best value with many destinations being half as expensive (or less) compared to traveling to the cheapest destination in the US.

If you are curious, Houston, Las Vegas, and Atlanta were runners up for the least expensive travel destinations in the US.

You can see more of the TripAdvisor list if you are curious here.

This list makes no sense, rio is in the list and there is no city in switzerland or norway. 84 dollars for dinner in Rio? You taking a family of 12?
Uber prices are way off chart also.

TripAdvisor fails to mention Krakow, Poland, far cheaper than any of those other cities in their list for Europe. Krakow is an incredible bargain for American tourists with a fascinating history. I am someone who normally avoids restaurants when traveling and Krakow has been a very different kind of vacation for me with an average two restaurant meals daily. Meals have ranged from $11 for two persons to $30 for two persons for two entrees and a 0.5 L beer each.

This town has 24 hour alcohol stores common and hundreds of restaurants with average beer price for 0.5L (17 oz) ranging from $1.75 to $2.25. There are something like 500 Polish beers. English widely spoken and some of the best tourist facilities of any city I have visited.
