A 19-Year-Old Becomes One of the Youngest Commercial Airline Pilots

At 19, Luke Elsworth has become of the youngest commercial airline pilots in the industry (and officially the youngest in the UK). He’s working at easyJet as a first officer after enrolling in their pilot training program a few days after turning 18. The program included six months in simulators and light aircraft flying in Arizona. After 18 months of instruction, he recently flew his first paid flight from Gatwick to Toulouse. The young pilot joins his dad who is also an easyJet pilot. He told Metro that he would feel fully comfortable dealing with an in-flight emergency and that he hasn’t heard any concerns from passengers.

“I’ve not had anything. If there was a train driver that was 18 and he’d been through all the training I’d have complete trust in him. I wouldn’t bat an eyelid.” When questioned if he would be able to cope with a mid-air emergency, Mr Elsworth said: “I would hope I would… There’s no reason why I shouldn’t be. I’m comfortable flying the aircraft.”
