A 2015 article on meal spend among US based airlines has been updated with the latest DOT data and American comes out on top. Keep in mind that these figures are averaged across all classes of service and include both domestic and international flights:
All US Carriers (including budget airlines and those with absolutely no comp meal/drink service) – $3.61
American – $6.43
United – $6.08
Delta – $5.36
Virgin America – $3.73
JetBlue – $1.39
Spirit – $0.26
Looking back at pre-9/11 spend, American and United were both spending over $8 per passenger. However, spending is up from its low of $3.30 in 2007.
