Whoops: British Airways Accidentally Promoted Virgin Atlantic’s Ad

by Enoch

This gave me a good chuckle, so I figure I’d share it. A few days ago, British Airways’ social media team accidentally shared rival Virgin Atlantic’s deal on Facebook. The post seemed to encourage potential customers to fly with Virgin Atlantic, and even included a “Book Now” button.

Netizens quickly pointed out the “error,” and Virgin Atlantic responded with a comment on the post.

But British Airways, which has about 5 times the number of Facebook followers as Virgin Atlantic, didn’t delete the post. Instead, they took it in good fun, by adding a caption to the post:

Finally we agree on something except for how to get there. #FlyBAtoLondon. Book here:  http://ba.uk/OVM9Eg

Speaking to the Daily Mail, a Virgin Atlantic spokesperson expressed the team’s reaction when they found out. The even included an offer of a free ticket to the employee who made the mistake!

We were quite surprised to see that British Airways shared our post, however, on this occasion, we do agree with them that Virgin Atlantic is the only way to fly. As the individual must have had a bad day, we’d be happy to offer them a free flight to make up for it!

Tourism to the UK is seeing a significant rise, most likely driven by the fall in the British pound after the country voted to exit the EU. BBC reported that in the 28 days after the vote, flight bookings rose by almost 5%. Bookings from Hong Kong went up by over 30%, and reservations from the US leapt by almost 10%. Travel from the rest of Europe is also rising, as the pound fell to a 6-year low against the euro just earlier this month.

Maybe it is a good time to visit London. What would have been your pick? British Airways or Virgin Atlantic?
