There is just something special about being able to stretch out and enjoy a good night’s sleep in an airplane. That’s partially why I enjoy using my miles to fly First Class when I travel internationally. Of course, a great First Class seat still dwarfs specially configured private jets, with full-sized bedrooms and bathrooms, like the Boeing 787 Dream Jet. But what if you can experience most of this, while staying (basically) on the ground?
Hotel Costa Verde in Costa Rica is a tree top hotel that is converted from a Boeing 727. The airplane was originally built in 1965, and had been operated by South African Airways and Avianca Airlines. After its retirement, the airframe was transported from San Jose to the jungles of Manuel Antonio, where the hotel is located. The developers settled the airframe on a pedestal, which is 50 feet above the ground. They also completely renovated the interior of the plane, including the addition of teak paneling from Costa Rica, and furniture from Java, Indonesia.

The result is an awesome 2-bedroom suite with a total of 3 queen beds, 2 bathrooms, and a kitchenette. The bedrooms are air-conditioned, and one of the showers actually open to the back of the plane, where the tail used to be! The wings of the plane were creatively transformed into balconies, which boast gorgeous views. The suite also has a skylight, which was converted from the tail-mounted engine.

The rates are actually pretty reasonable, ranging between $260 in “Promo Season” (September – November) to $750 (Easter and Christmas) a night, plus taxes. But this is a one-of-a-kind experience that will make aviation enthusiasts super happy. I definitely hope to check it out if I’m visiting Costa Rica!
