Delta Announces Non-Stop JFK – Rio de Janeiro (GIG) Flight

On Thursday, Delta announced their plans for a new daily nonstop flight between New York-JFK (JFK) and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (GIG), beginning Dec. 21, 2017, subject to U.S. Department of Transportation approval. Delta says that their strategic alliance with GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes will extend the reach of this service to 23 destinations within Brazil and provide easy connections at Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG) in Rio de Janeiro.

“We listen to our customers and continuously strive to offer them increasingly convenient ways to travel, both for business and leisure,” said Luciano Macagno, Delta’s Director-Brazil. “It is exciting to have the opportunity to offer a daily direct flight from Rio de Janeiro to our second-largest international hub at New York-JFK. Delta’s continued route expansions demonstrate our commitment to the Brazilian market and the strength of our alliance with our Brazilian partner, GOL.”

American already offers daily 777 service between JFK and GIG and Delta’s proposed schedule sees both airline’s flights arriving into GIG at the exact same time.

Delta’s flight will be operated using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft with 35 Delta One full flat-bed seats. Elite customers and passengers flying in Delta One through Rio de Janeiro will have access to the recently opened GOL VIP lounge located in GIG’s Terminal 2.

  1. There was an era of $400-ish fares on AA JFK-GIG, which was terrific. The visa requirement tends to keep the uninitiated at bay, so I’m surprised to see enough volume to warrant a competitor. If this brings the return of cheap flights, I’ll be plenty glad while it lasts.
