Marriott Hacker Confesses to Slashing Rates to “Screw His Boss”

by Adam

We previously blogged about a disgruntled former Marriott employee who was being called the Robin Hood of Hotels for hacking Marriott’s reservation system and slashing rates on about 3,000 rooms, some to as low as $10 a night. The incident happened last August when Juan Rodriguez  got into the backend reservation system and updated rates that were previously $159-$499 a night down to $10-$59 a night. Marriott says the hack cost them more than $50,000 before they caught on to the updated room rates. Unfortunately for the hacker, the room rate changes were made from his home IP address, allowing authorities to tie the updates to his New York City apartment. Prosecutors charged him with multiple felonies including computer tampering and computer trespass.

Well, Juan recently spoke to TMZ and admitted to changing the rates in order to get revenge for his “unfair firing” . He says he changed the rates to make life difficult for his assistant general manager who fired him after he left his post at a Fairfield Inn & Suites for 90 minutes.

He claims other employees at the hotel told him the asst. GM was going to make up a story about him renting rooms under the table, so he wouldn’t be able to collect unemployment. He says he connected remotely to Marriott’s booking network with a company password that was still active — and started slashing rates … knowing his old bosses would have to fix it manually.”I actually wanted them to work. I also wanted to teach them not to keep your password out there.”

Guess you can never really tell what (or who) is behind a “mistake fare” or “mistake rate”, as the real story might be more interesting than simply a mistake!

Another example of how employers need to treat their employees better. If they feel slighted or not taken care of, they can literally ruin your business right under your nose.
