Marriott Using Prefabricated Rooms Stacked Together to Speed up Hotel Construction

by Adam

The LA Times has an interesting piece on how Marriott is now using prefabricated rooms that can literally be stacked together on top of each other using a crane to construct the full hotel. The rooms are built and furnished offsite in a factory and then transported via truck to the site of the property. Marriott says that a prefabricated build on a 350 room hotel can be finished in 6 months instead of the normal 20.

Despite having prefabricated rooms, the designs of the new hotels are not limited to squares or rectangles. The first hotel built under Marriott’s new modular effort, the 97-room Folsom Fairfield Inn & Suites, opened in December. Marriott has four other projects in various states of completion in Washington state, Oklahoma, Kentucky and North Carolina.
