United Wins Lawsuit Against “Untied.com” Complaint Site – An Evil Alliance Member

by Adam

Untied.com, yes that’s “Untied”, a website that tracks complaints against United, has been found in violation of trademark and copyright infringement.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the airline says they were concerned about the confusion caused to passengers upon visiting the site, especially when they see United logos and the old color scheme and layout.

“We are pleased with the court’s decision. We have always maintained that Mr. Cooperstock should be able to voice his opinions, and our case was to protect United customers and avoid confusion by asking him to not use our intellectual property on his website and related channels,” United said in an email.

I absolutely hate when I receive a canned response from an airline that doesn’t even address the issue or matter I email about…those formed letters are why Jeremy Cooperstock formed the site over 20 years ago! The site has since collected over 32,000 complaints and even has an employee section (definitely worth a read) as well as an area with advice on how to sue the airline. The most used section of the site allows you to submit a complaint in one of many categories including: baggage, denied boarding, discrimination, safety concerns, mileage plus, delays/cancellations, overcharges, in-flight seating, and more.

When he created Untied.com, Cooperstock said, he posted a statement saying he looked forward to shutting it down when the airline showed it was “treating passengers with a little more dignity.” He did not expect to still be running the website 20 years later, he said.

United has been granted an injunction and the two parties were ordered to negotiate terms within 45 days.
