Much beloved and famed Maho Beach, found at the foot of the runway at St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport on the Dutch side of the island, has very sadly been devastated by Irma. The airport is extremely popular with tourists and planespotters, who watch aircraft (AF and KL 747s were the big draws when they flew to SXM), passing only a short distance above their heads
Sea water flows right to the airport gates and the runway is covered in sand and debris. The terminal itself received extensive damage and one jet bridge collapsed.
French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said that the airport is not destroyed, but aid will have to be delivered via helicopter.

The Dutch Royal Navy is providing numerous status updates via Twitter, and marine ships from Aruba and Curacao have already made it safely to St. Marteen where the marines are providing essential aid and relief supplies.

Sonesta Resorts has three properties on the island, one at Maho Beach, and they issued the below statement this morning. The company has canceled reservations for the remainder of 2017. Meanwhile, The Westin St. Marteen was also heavily damaged.
Most sad, at least eight people were killed and many more injured on the island.
Happier times…(see Rene’s post from earlier this year – What is it like at SXM Maho Beach & the “jet blast” experience? It is so worth a visit to Sint Maarten!)

I have been to St.Martin 3 times by being on a wonderful Blues Cruise put on by Roger Nabor from Kansas City Missouri. I really enjoyed my whole Beach and watching the planes come in and out and it’s a beautiful island on both sides I hope they can get it back together so we can start visiting again and my prayers are with everyone over there
