180K American AAdvantage Miles Opportunity Available! 100K AmEx Platinum Offer Too?

Crazy, the number of American AAdvantage miles on offer right now is incredible, literally 180K miles from credit card sign-ups alone, and that’s before hitting the spend requirements thanks to limited time offers from both Citi and Barclaycard! Of course, these can be used for amazing partner redemptions on EtihadCathayJAL, Qatar, and more. That’s just one of a few best ever offers that have returned as banks try to win new cardholders prior to the end of the year.

I personally took advantage of all 3 America offers over the summer, though my total haul was 170K as Barclaycard was offering 10K less for their sign-up bonus then.

AAdvantage
Citi and American have brought back the very popular limited time best ever public offer from the summer which provides applicants 60,000 AAdvantage miles after $3K in purchases within the first 3 months for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ MasterCard®. Citi and American are offering the same 60K sign-up for the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® which is the business version of the card.  Combining these two offers together will yield you 120K AAdvantage miles just for signing up. That’s enough miles for super premium first class award redemptions on American partners Etihad, Cathay Pacific, and Qatar among others. The $95 annual fee is waived for the first year on this card as well.

Remember, Citi does limit individuals from receiving sign-up bonuses to once every 24 months after opening or closing the same type of card (an open account past the 24 month mark…even for the same card is OK). There is also guidance that you should apply for no more than one Citi card per day and that you wait 8 days in between applications…and that you submit no more than 2 applications per 60 day period. So for this 120K combo, I’d apply for one card today (combined with the Barclaycard below) and then another 8 days later.

THEN, Barclaycard is offering 60K AAdvantage miles (increased from 50K over the summer when the total points earned with the 3 cards would net you 170K) after your first purchase within 3 months for their AAdvantage® Aviator™ Red World Elite Mastercard®. There’s no minimum spend, but there is a $95 annual fee which is not waived. The normal offer for this card is 40K miles. The T&Cs state that the offer “may not be available if you already have or have had an account with us”. The FlyerTalk Wiki is a bit more specific – existing cardmembers, existing accounts, and previous cardmember with accounts closed in the past 24 months may not be eligible for this offer. This does not include members who were transitioned from a US Airways card to an Aviator Red card. Also, there are numerous posts of existing and previous cardmembers receiving the sign-up bonuses multiple times (myself included), which seems to points to the more liberal policy stated in the application T&Cs. The card also offers first checked bag free and 10% of your redeemed miles back.

The Platinum Card® from American Express (Potential 100K Offer?)
This card normally has a 60K sign-up bonus after $5K in spend within 3 months, however many (including my Mom) have been able to score a 100K sign-up offer using the Credicards.com CardMatch tool. Others though (like my Dad) receive few offers at all, he was only presented with three Capital One options. The tool allows you to input your name, address, and the last four digits of your SSN to see if you are targeted for any special offers.  You will not receive a hard credit pull when using the tool, though a soft pull will occur, that’s the one that does not impact your credit score.

All other fees and perks remain the same, so let’s go through those. Let’s start out with the cost, it’s $550 a year!  Yes, that sounds outrageous but you make up the initial outlay extremely quickly, especially if you’re a frequent traveler with no lounge access.  With membership comes complimentary Delta Sky Club lounge access, access to Priority Pass Select lounges around the globe, and American Express Centurion Lounges. If you are someone who buys any of these memberships, then this card is definitely worth the membership fee. Prices for annual club memberships at airlines vary based on your status level, however Delta charges $300-$450. Even more valuable, you can add up to 3 additional members for only $175 total, which means 4 people can enjoy these benefits for $625 or $156.25 per person for access to all of these lounges for the year.  The card also includes $200 airline fee credit per year.  You select an airline to receive up to $200 annually in statement credits for incidental fees such as checked bags, in-flight refreshments, and change fees. Finally, the card also comes with Global Entry registration, which normally costs $100. You’ll also receive SPG / Marriott Gold Status, Hilton Gold Status, and GoGo and Boingo wifi access while traveling. Additionally, a special Platinum concierge desk that can help with special dining reservations, sold out event assistance, and shopping services. You also get VIP treatment at thousands of hotels in the Fine Hotels and Resorts Program booked via AMEX, including upgrades and late 4pm checkout. No foreign currency conversion fees and the standard purchase protection plans are also included. You also earn 5x points for flights booked directly with airlines or AmEx Travel, in March 2017 the same was added for eligible hotels booked on amextravel.com.  Membership Rewards points are extremely flexible and can be transferred to several partners including some of the largest airlines. Do the math, first subtract the $200 airline fee credit from the annual fee.  Now, if the remaining cost is lower than what you pay each year for an airline membership, the card definitely makes sense, even without taking into consideration Global Entry or the hotel benefits. You will receive 60,000 Membership Rewards points after $5000 in purchases within three months.

  • Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards® points after you use your new Card to make $5,000 in purchases in your first 3 months.
  • Up to $200 for Uber rides annually. Credit and Uber VIP status available to Basic Card Member only.
  • 5X Membership Rewards® points on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel.
  • 5X Membership Rewards® points on eligible hotels booked on amextravel.com.
  • As a Platinum Card Member, you can enjoy access to the Global Lounge Collection, the only credit card airport lounge access program that includes proprietary lounge locations around the world.
  • Receive complimentary benefits with an average total value of $550 with Fine Hotels & Resorts. Learn More.
  • $200 Airline Fee Credit, up to $200 per calendar year in baggage fees and more at one qualifying airline.
