United Suspends Flights from Newark (EWR) to Delhi (DEL) Due to Toxic Smog

United has issued travel waivers through the weekend for those traveling on flight 82 from Newark (EWR) to Delhi (DEL) given the toxic smog that has engulfed India’s capital. The current air quality in New Delhi is more than 75 times the World Health Organization’s safe breathing levels. The levels are based on the measurement of fine particulate matter which is considered extremely dangerous as the particles are so small that they can make their way deep into the lungs and potentially pass into other organs.

“We encourage customers who are traveling over the next several days to visit United.com or download our mobile app for the latest updates and developments. The change fee and any difference in fare will be waived for new United flights departing on or before November 18, 2017, as long as travel is rescheduled in the originally ticketed cabin (any fare class) and between the same cities as originally ticketed.”

The horrible conditions have also led to the cancelation of all school classes and strong bans on trucks and other industrial activities in and around the city.

  1. It was reported that just breathing in Delhi is equivalent to smoking 44 cigarettes a day. Thank God for pollution regulations in the US.
