KLM Ditching Pilot Hats, No Longer Included in Uniform

It’s the end of an era for pilot caps at KLM.  The airline made the following announcement a few days ago:

Pilots have worn caps since the earliest days of KLM’s existence. Over the years, the style and look of the cap has changed to suit the fashion of the day. KLM no longer sees any added value in pilots wearing caps. Besides, the aim is to give pilots a more modern and accessible appearance. Consequently, the pilot’s cap for women and men will no longer be worn at KLM and KLM Cityhopper from 1 January 2018.

KLM cites the fact that other airlines and travel operators have done away with caps that historically were part of uniforms.  The airline says that pilots can keep their caps or donate them to ‘Stichting Hoogvliegers’, an organization that KLM has worked with for many years which offers children who are ill a chance to be pilot for a day.
