Marriott’s Expansion in Maniacal Mexico Forges Ahead Despite Numerous Warnings

by Dino

As we reported last week, the US embassy issued a very serious travel alert for Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Another list of the world’s most dangerous cities, generated by a Mexican anti-violence think-tank, ranks South America as the most dangerous region for travel followed by Mexico with Los Cabos, Mexico taking the honorable #1 spot.

These lists come at an interesting time as Marriott expands in the region, most recently with the addition of the Luxury Collection in Los Cabos.

“The debut of Solaz Resort marks The Luxury Collection’s seventh hotel in Mexico; an important milestone for the brand as we showcase our commitment to expanding our footprint in this remarkable destination,” said Mitzi Gaskins, Global Brand Leader, The Luxury Collection. “Solaz Resort will offer global explorers a new gateway to the Baja California Peninsula and deliver unparalleled travel experiences signature to The Luxury Collection.”

Now, this is the first time ever that Los Cabos has appeared on this list, but it’s not surprising as the drug cartel violence has broiled over to all compass points in Mexico.  Additionally, the US State Department has increased its travel warnings to five Mexican states equating their danger levels to Syria, Afghanistan and North Korea.

Sorry, but no. You can’t tell me that New Orleans is more dangerous than Mogadishu, Port-au-Prince, or Lagos. No way.
