Lufthansa Boarded 350 A380 Passengers in 20 Minutes W/ Biometric Tech That Arrived at LAX This Week

by Adam

Lufthansa implemented biometric boarding at LAX earlier this week, allowing passengers to self-board at the gate with a simple facial scan. The airline says that during a trial the technology allowed 350+ passengers to board an A380 in just 20 minutes.

Here’s how it works…

Passengers approach the self-boarding scanner and pause momentarily while their facial scans are sent real-time to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The agency verifies their identity which triggers the gates to open while the airline’s system marks the passenger as boarded. If all goes well, Lufthansa says they want to expand the technology to all US airports that they service.

US carriers are getting in on the fun too, Delta and JetBlue are both testing similar processes at Boston and Atlanta respectively. British Airways also has biometric scanning in place at LAX and Condé Nast Traveler reports that Qantas and Korean Air are getting ready to start their own tests.

Will you miss your paper or digital boarding pass?
