The Hilton Tokyo has a great location in Shinjuku, a fantastic lounge, and amazing service. This is part four of a six part trip report from my travels to Japan:

Arrival and check-in – The hotel lobby is almost always packed, there are numerous very large tour groups that tend to stay here. The wait to check-in was about 10 minutes (the HHonors member line was no shorter than the normal line). Don’t worry there are traditional Japanese musical performances in the lobby while you wait! As a Diamond member I was not upgraded (the hotel was completely sold out), but I was given a high-floor, free internet, and executive lounge access.

The King Room -

Hilton Tokyo Shinjuku14

High floor with great views, comfy bed, multiple outlets, blackout shades. Prior to 2013, half the rooms were renovated and half were not…and there was a huge difference (especially the bathrooms). I’m happy to report that all rooms have now been renovated. Wifi was decent, though certainly not as good as the private individual wifi network at the Hyatt Regency Tokyo across the street. If you want to have no idea what time it is, try those blackout shades!

For those of you visiting for work, pretty awesome dry cleaning services. Each item is individually cellophane wrapped to avoid wrinkling and then every 2-3 items are boxed for you and delivered on your bed like a present.

The executive lounge is definitely the sweet spot for this hotel. They had my name down by day two (even somehow the employees who I had not yet met), provided constant service, and the food was awesome. Some of the food options each night were incredible – a chef cutting tender pieces of Kobe filet for guests, a sushi night with great roll options made right in front of you, gourmet Japanese style sliders, and a beer and wine tasting experience. Granted, there seemed to be many guests who treated the lounge as their restaurant for dinner. The staff were surprisingly OK with this – I definitely saw one family ask for four portions each of the Kobe filet. Breakfast was impressive as well with all the normal options (both Western and Asian) plus an omelet bar, freshly squeezed OJ station, and smoothie option. I should also mention that the lounge is spacious and actually takes up two floors (37 and 38)!

Like the Hyatt across the street, there’s a free shuttle service to Shinjuku station and the Tokyo Metro is directly below the hotel. Unique to the Hilton are rooftop tennis courts and a 24/7 gym. If choosing between the two, there aren’t huge differences.  I really liked the lounge at the Hyatt Regency but the Hilton lounge definitely had better food options. I’d give the Hyatt a slight edge with their bed, though the rooms were quite similar. With Diamond status at both, neither property upgraded my room type – though I was given lounge access at each hotel.

I’m sure you all remember my Conrad Maldives stay which I wrote about several times (Trip Report Part 1 & Trip Report – Conrad Maldives Rangali Island 2), well it turns out that even-though the stay was in December 2013 and originally booked in March 2013, the points have been deducted once again in March 2014…but at the new rate of 95,000 per night instead of the 37,500 I booked at, an increase of 230,000 points! The old award was then redeposited.

Screen Shot 2014-03-10 at 7.15.47 PM

Screen Shot 2014-03-10 at 7.26.57 PM

I just got off the phone with Hilton HHonors account care and they were easily able to see everything I was explaining and eager to correct the situation. They’ve sent a message to the hotel asking them to redeposit the points and I should hear back within 3 days.

I suspect that most of you wouldn’t have this problem as you burned most of your points pre-devaluation and there wouldn’t be many to pull. Unfortunately, I had a business trip this year in a location where there was only a Hilton…hence the additional balance.

Déjà vu? Sort of…this happened post Hyatt devaluations as well - Hyatt Bonus Points Awarded on Pre-Devaluation Award Pricing Mistakes

The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island experience starts before you even reach the resort. Upon landing in the Maldives you are greeted by hotel staff who walk you to your private Conrad vehicle. From there you are transported to a Conrad lounge at the seaplane terminal with multiple amenities before boarding the plane to the resort. This is part eight of a fifteen part trip report from my travels to the Maldives and Dubai. This picture report covers the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island airport and seaplane experience.

I booked the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island all the way back in March 2013 just prior to the HHonors devaluation - 3 Days till HHonors Devaluation – How I’m Using My Points. Almost all the points were acquired using the sign-up bonuses from the Hawaiian Airlines Bank of America and Hawaiian Airlines Bank of Hawaii cards. I decided to book the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island as it was somewhere I always wanted to visit and it was moving from a category 7 to the new category 10. Additionally, at the time of booking the cash rate was $1365 per night or 37.5k points per night, after March 28th that rate was going up to 95,000 per night but the 5th night would be free.

As we got closer to the travel dates the cash rates were even more expensive:

OK, more about the room reserved and the unexpected and amazing upgrade we received in part two tomorrow.

After collecting your luggage at the airport you’ll see several Conrad team members in the arrivals hall. We were warmly greeted upon providing our names and taken to our Conrad vehicle just outside the arrivals hall. The car had the A/C on blast and two cold water bottles and towels waiting for us. It’s a short 10 minute drive to the seaplane terminal and interestingly enough you’ll go right by the main runway with no fencing or other barriers (3rd pic below)…

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island01 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island02 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island03

There’s another team member waiting for you as your car arrives to the terminal and you are escorted upstairs to the Conrad lounge. There’s a formal check-in area, but it seemed that all guests were instead brought inside the lounge, situated in comfy chairs, and then asked for their credit cards and passports. All paperwork was then brought inside the lounge…but first you’ll receive another cool towel and a choice of juices.

Perhaps you want a complimentary massage? Granted, if you like it they will ask you to reserve another massage for once you arrive at the resort, but you are not pressured and you can simply say that you want to review all your activity options once you arrive.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island18 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island19

Shower and kid’s playroom in the lounge as well…

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island32 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island31

It’s extremely warm out but the terrace with views of all the seaplanes landing and taking off is worth checking out for a bit…

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island29 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island24 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island25 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island26 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island27 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island33 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island34

Note that although there is a plane in the Conrad colors, that’s not necessarily the one you’ll be taking. We were on the plane above as all the planes are operated by Trans Maldivian airlines on behalf of the many hotels. You are assigned a seaplane based on when you arrive at the lounge, so they say you could wait up to two hours if there are other planes that arrived before yours. Luckily, our wait time was a little less than 90 minutes.

I guess here is where I should mention the price for these flights…they are not included in your nightly hotel rate. A few weeks before your trip you’ll receive an email like the one below from the hotel. They’ll ask for your flight details so that they can set up the seaplane transfers at a cost of $507.60 per person roundtrip.  You really have no other options. The hotel can set up a boat transfer that can take up to 3 hours and the cost can be even higher as you’re essentially charting a boat. There are luggage restrictions (55lbs checked and 5 lbs carry-on) and our bags were weighed, but no one said anything even though they were both over.

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 11.14.22 AM

We were seated up front with two very chill pilots just enjoying the ride…both wearing sandals! The flight takes about 30 minutes and the scenery below was beautiful. You’re provided earbuds, but I didn’t find the sound to be loud enough that I needed them. The flight was smooth and the landing in the water was great.

Interestingly enough, it seems that the plane may have been a former Qantas plane…

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island42 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island43 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island44 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island45 Conrad Maldives Rangali Island46

There’s a full welcoming committee waiting for you at the seaplane dock upon arrival. You’ll soon be greeted by your host who will grab your luggage and escort you across the bridge to check-in. The guest service manager is also there to greet everyone and chit chat a bit…

Guests staying at Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Homewood Suites, and Home 2 Suites, will soon be able to trade up their free internet for faster wifi for a fee. The changes are set to begin within the next two months. Nancy Trejos at USA Today reports that:

The price will vary depending on the location, but guests will typically be charged $3.95. They will be able to use it on up to three devices. Josh Weiss, vice president of brand and guest technology for Hilton, says guests have indicated in surveys that they would be willing to pay for upgraded bandwith. “It’s no secret. We all know that that’s one of the most important amenities,” Weiss says of Wi-Fi. “We’re really trying to do this in a way that not only acknowledges guests who want faster speeds but also the prevalence of multiple devices.”

No word yet on whether Hilton HHonors elite members will receive complimentary upgraded bandiwth service, though I’d venture to guess that they will.

Starwood is opening one hotel in China every two weeks, Hilton plans to go from 39 to 150 properties, and InterContinental is doubling its hotels in China to 400 over the next three to five years. Overcapacity or just fueling business need? From the Asian Review:

In the northeastern port city of Dalian, a Ritz-Carlton, a Grand Hyatt, a Langham and an MGM are all under construction. The Starwood group alone is preparing three hotels simultaneously. That is on top of a Shangri-La, a Conrad, a Hilton and a Furama already open and within walking distance of one another.

As per the Review, occupancy rates at luxury hotels in mainland China are significantly lower than in other countries. While the rates in Hong Kong and Singapore hover around 80% and break-even is said to be in the 70% range, China is falling well below that at a rate of 57.6% reported in May 2013. However, it’s important to note that hotel brands like Starwood and IHG reduce their risk by simply agreeing to manage the hotels without having to invest their own capital in the projects.

Check out the full article from the Review for some insight at to why it still might make sense from a brand recognition standpoint to grow in China despite these occupancy rates.

Here’s a promo you really have to earn to take advantage of! Hold on to that original hotel bill and pay the same rate you paid on your wedding night at the Waldorf Astoria…even if it’s a suite! The one catch, it has to be a 50th anniversary or greater! Tony and Jo Fivorante (86 and 85 respectively) will be spending their 66th anniversary there tomorrow night! From ABC News:

The Staten Island couple will celebrate their 66 th wedding anniversary Sunday the same way they spent their wedding night, with a stay at the Waldorf Astoria. The couple, who kept their original receipt from 1948, will also pay the same rate for their room at the exclusive Towers of the Waldorf on Park Avenue, a whopping $15.75. Hotel rates now start at $799 for suites and $1,299 for presidential-style suites. The Fioravantes are cashing in on the hotel’s long-standing tradition of honoring the original rate for couples celebrating an anniversary of 50 years or more who spent their wedding night at the Waldorf and kept the receipt after all those years. This time around, the Fioravantes will likely not have to worry about a snafu they ran into at the hotel on their wedding night. As their receipt shows, the couple was first given a room with double beds on their wedding night before the hotel staff realized the mistake and quickly corrected it, according to their daughter.

I booked a Beach Villa (lowest level room) at the Conrad Maldives last February prior to the HHonors devaluation, knowing that an upgrade would more than likely not be complimentary at the resort, regardless of my HHonors status. Well, I was shocked today when we found out that we had been upgraded to a Water Villa! Here’s the email I received from the hotel about three weeks before our stay, listing the prices for upgrades and the included HHonors benefits:

Dear Mr Point Me to the Plane

Sunny greetings from Conrad Maldives Rangali Island!

Thank you for choosing our beautiful resort for your upcoming vacation.

HILTON HHONORS

Due to the very special nature of the accommodations at Conrad Maldives, we are unable to offer complimentary upgraded accommodations. However, as you are a valued Diamond member, we are delighted to offer you the following benefits during your stay. Please ensure that your Diamond status is active upon arrival in order to enjoy full Diamond member benefits. Kindly note that Diamond benefits are only applicable for cardholder and one guest. In the event that cardholder is not travelling, guests who are staying with us will not be able to enjoy the benefits below.

  • Complimentary breakfast for cardholder and one guest per day. Additional guests will be charged at $35 + taxes per adult per day. Children below 12 years old get 50% discount.
  • One bottle of wine upon arrival
  • Chocolate & Fruit amenities upon arrival
  • Daily Happy Hour at Vilu restaurant for you and sharing guest in same villa from 17.00 – 18.00 hours

HHonors™ Global Benefits:

  • Earn points & miles “double-dipping”
  • Complimentary weekday newspaper (online print)
  • Late checkout upon request, subject to availability
  • Two complimentary bottles of water per day

ROOM UPGRADE

If you wish to upgrade your villa for your upcoming stay, either for the entire stay or partial stay, I am pleased to offer 30% discount on upgrade charges. The discounted upgrade rates from Beach Villa to the below mentioned villa categories as follows.

Beach Villa to Water Villa                              – USD 350.00 + taxes per night
Beach Villa to Deluxe Beach Villa               – USD 350.00 + taxes per night
Beach Villa to Superior Water Villa            – USD 525.00 + taxes per night
Beach Villa to Retreat Water Villa              – USD 665.00 + taxes per night
Beach Villa to Deluxe Water Villa               – USD 840.00 + taxes per night
Beach Villa to Premier Water Villa             – USD 1,645.00 + taxes per night
Beach Villa to Junior Beach Suite               – USD 1,645.00 + taxes per night

Taxes are 10% service charge and 8% Tourism Goods and Service Tax.

So this upgrade should have costed over $400 per night, however upon check-in we were told by our personal check-in assistant that the hotel was at 90% occupancy and that while upgrades are normally not complimentary, in this case they were more than happy to offer it to us…even without requesting one.

Awesome, really really exciting. Here’s a quick look at the room, full report in the coming weeks.

Welcoming committee….

Anyone else receive the email below from Hilton offering 500,000 – 1 Million HHonors bonus points plus Silver or Gold status for becoming a member of the Hilton Grand Vacations Club? Of course, becoming a member entails purchasing a timeshare…with prices ranging from $10,900–$613,000.  Given the 2013 HHonors devaluation and how easy it is to obtain Gold status each year via promotions requiring no stays at all (forget about Silver), it seems like a pretty horrible offer…unless you had planned to purchase an interest anyway. Still interested, you can sign up here with the full T&Cs below. My favorite line from the T&Cs - Retail value of 500,000 HHonors Bonus Points is up to USD $6,000, depending on the method of redemption. Obviously, to get that value with the current redemption rates you’ll have to redeem at a category 10 property like the Conrad Maldives at 95,000 per night with a 5th night free (rates during December for a standard room are $1365 with tax).

PS – Leaving for the Conrad Maldives under the old rates (35k per night) on Sunday!

500K HHonors

This offer is not valid with any other promotional offer and is only available through Hilton Grand Vacations™ Direct Department by calling 877-246-2832 and is not available on-site at any Hilton Grand Vacations resort. This offer begins December 4, 2013, and ends December 31, 2013. Offer valid for Hilton Grand Vacations Ownership Interest purchases equal to at least 7,000 ClubPoints.
