New AA Livery No Longer Definite? Plus Delta’s Advice for the New AA

by Adam

The Street has an interesting summary of the airline investor conference that took place on Monday. Regarding AA’s new livery, CEO Doug Parker mentioned that no decision has been made on the livery for the new airline. “Most of our customers don’t care what the outside of the airplane looks like,” Parker said. “It doesn’t affect their purchase decisions. (But) it’s really important to employees, who care a lot about it, and I care about that.” “We’ll take some time and talk to people and put that on the list of a number of things we have to figure out,” he said. Parker also mentioned that he received important advice from Delta’s CEO, Richard Anderson, regarding “taking the larger airline’s systems and processes and overlaying those on the smaller airline”.  Parker noted that he’d like to avoid the meltdown that occurred when America West’s Shares reservations system was selected over US Airways’ Sabre system. I actually care what the outside of the plane looks like. That is typically my first impression before I board. I’m not saying that I’m completely sold on the new American livery, but it’s way better than the combined United/Continental abomination.

@George – the question isn’t really whether you like it or not, but whether you would prefer to fly AA over another airline because of the outside appearance of the plane.

I personally wouldn’t. I do notice and appreciate how the plane looks, but I do that from the airport and don’t need to be flying AA to see their planes.

@george – Only in an in your face, garish sort of way! The new livery has no sense of historical pride and continuity of an iconic image.

I understand your points and that makes sense, but as Doug Parker states that the employees feel pride from the livery, as a customer I do too. I miss seeing the Pan Am globes lined up at JFK.

I currently fly United most, but only because of my need to fly to Singapore and India.
