Another Easy 500-1000 Miles from the US Airways MasterCard

by Adam

This card just keeps giving and giving. Here’s another easy way to earn even more bonus miles in addition to the original sign-up bonus and the 15,000 non-use bonus. Reader Andrew in SLC emailed me back in March that he received an email offer in late February that offered 500 miles for switching to paperless statements – Sign up for Paperless Statements on your US Airways MasterCard by March 31, 2013 and get 500 Bonus Miles.

Now, according to Andrew, his wife Marni already had a previous US Airways card and her new card was automatically enrolled in paperless statements. He switched her back to paper statements the day he received the email in hopes that she too would receive the offer. Andrew reported that three weeks and two days after switching to paper, Marni received the offer as well…but for 1,000 miles!

Like Marni, I already had a previous US Airways MasterCard and it was enrolled for paperless statements which carried over to my new card received in December. I switched back to paper statements on March 11th and have been waiting for my paperless offer. It took much longer than Marni’s! Today, May 16th (just over 2 months after reverting to paper statements), I finally received the offer in the mail…though it’s only for 500 miles. Be Green Warning – For 1,000 US Airways miles, I certainly would have made the switch and sacrificed being green for two months. However, for only 500 miles, you might want to consider the environment. Up to you…

Additionally, Splittin’ Aces on Flyertalk has started a thread on Flyertalk regarding his 500 mile paperless offer and the other offers received as well.

So, without taking into account any of my spending, I’ve earned a whopping 55,500 points from one US Airways MasterCard (40K sign-up, 15K spending bonus (pending), 500 paperless bonus). That’s a pretty incredible sign-up bonus! I plan to cancel the card once the spend bonus posts and apply once more to try and earn the bonuses all over again (I was shockingly turned down in my last app-o-rama for already having the card).

My fee is hitting this month so I’m canceling too. How long should I wait before reapplying for the bonus?

@Phil – 91 days used to be the magic number, even if you already have an existing card. Now, several readers have written in that they were denied even after 91-120 days since they already had a version of the card (myself included). They have been successful just a few days after the card was canceled, though I plan to wait about a month before applying.

I’m planning to cancel and try to get bonuses all over again too, however I’m waiting on the 15k bonus to hit now. I also got denied last time for having an account already even though I had canceled it a few days earlier. Not sure what that was about. CSR said no chance of me getting one after multiple calls.

@Curtis – I had the same experience, hoping I’ll be fine once I cancel the current card.

I don’t have this card myself but I’ve had good luck calling up chase and telling them I was “thinking of canceling” the card because the annual fee didn’t justify the benefits. I received 5k UR points for my ink bold and 10K united miles plus 2 club passes for my chase explorer card. Try it with Barclays and let me know.

@Grant – Not a bad idea to get some additional miles…before actually canceling the card. I intend to actually cancel as I won’t be able to obtain another until this one is canceled. I’m looking forward to a 35K bonus for signing up again (plus another potential 15K bonus).

It looks like you recently may have opened your card, but for those of us with older cards, depending on when you opened the card, and which terms you received, you might want to wait till the anniversary date to cancel for the annual 10,000 bonus. Although getting the big bonus for another card outweighs the “retention” bonus.

My old Chairman’s offer just awarded me the 10,000 bonus, paired with the 40,000 from opening, and the 15,000 targeted spend, it was a milescow. Plus I opened a 2nd card a couple months ago for 35k, paired with my current 15k spend offer.
