3X AA Miles – Dining, Gas, Groceries, Dept Stores!

by Adam

With this offer I’ll be curbing some of my Sapphire Preferred card spend and using my Citibank Platinum Select AAdvantage card for the first time in a very long time.  I received this email from Citi earlier in the week offering 3 AAdvantage miles per $1 spent on purchases at department stores, restaurants, gas stations, and grocery stores through March 31, 2014. Sadly, it’s only valid for up to 2,500 AAdvantage miles. However, with the upcoming United devaluation, I’m quite happy to increase my AA balance (even just a bit) instead of continually growing my Ultimate Rewards balances with dining spend. The link is unique to my card account so check your emails for the offer registration.

3X AA Miles Promo AA Miles Earn 3x

This offer starts within 2 business days of when you enroll and will end on 03/31/14. AAdvantage® miles are only earned on eligible purchases. Earnings associated with this program will equal 2 AAdvantage® bonus mile(s) per $1 spent on eligible purchases and may overlap with other special offers in which you are currently enrolled. AAdvantage® miles earned with this offer are subject to a maximum of 2,500 AAdvantage® bonus miles. Eligible purchases exclude purchases made at warehouses and discount stores, balance transfers, cash advances, convenience checks, items returned for credit, fees and interest charges. Department stores are classified as merchants that provide a general line of merchandise from departments that usually have separate checkout counters. Restaurants are classified as stand-alone dining establishments that primarily prepare food and drinks for immediate consumption by consumers, either on the merchant’s premises or packaged for takeout, and include bars, cocktail lounges, discotheques, nightclubs, taverns and fast food restaurants. Gas stations are classified as merchants that primarily sell vehicle fuel for consumer use. Grocery stores, including supermarkets, are classified as merchants that provide a complete line of food merchandise for home consumption. This offer includes convenience stores which are classified as merchants who sell a limited variety of food items. All purchases must be posted during the promotional period. We do not determine how merchants are classified, however, they are generally classified based upon the merchant’s primary line of business. We reserve the right to determine which purchases qualify for this offer. In order to qualify for this offer, the account must be open and current at all times. If your account is closed for any reason, including if you convert to another card product, you may no longer be eligible for this offer. You may receive more than one communication regarding this bonus offer with a reply-by-date of 02/28/14; however, if you have already enrolled in this offer, no further action is required. This promotional offer is non-transferrable and applies to the account ending in the last 4 digits referenced in this offer.

I got this last quarter of 2013 and it combined with an ongoing retention offer of 750 additional miles every month I spend $750 (so 2x + 3x). Citi did a great job moving this card to the front of my wallet.

@dubaych: I have the same retention offer for Visa for 16 months and AE for 12 months ending March of 2014. The business card also offers 3x points to buy at electronics and computer stores but it’s not useful to me. Hope they will offer me an offer on top of the retention bonus.

As for gas purchase, I buy it at Arco and Vallero in CA but both stations have coded as grocery stores for some reason. Probably because they sell foods and drinks as well. I never can get 2x points on Ink card or any other cards, due to their coding. How do you get bonus points for gas purchase?

@Shannon – Definitely give them a call. They are currently offering waived $95 fees and additional mileage incentives.

I signed up for the 3x last week but no one confirmed it and my points haven’t gone up even though I shopped. I resubmitted the invite #’s and got the same message: within 2 business days I can start earning. If this goes on, I’ll run out of days till 3/31! Does anyone have a good tel num. for them?
