Delta Grants Me Soft Landing for 2014-2015!

by Adam

I made a conscious effort in 2013 to move a lot of my business related flying away from Delta. They certainly are the most convenient airline for me in terms of flights from JFK and LGA, often flying to more places that I need to be than any other airline. However, their constant “enhancements” last year as well as the upcoming devaluations this year had caused me to rethink some of my flight choices…if I wasn’t too inconvenienced. Of course, I just flew them to Kansas City (MCI) from LGA two weeks ago as they were the only carrier operating a NYC-MCI route besides United from Newark. The LGA-MCI flight also has great frequency with four flights per day.

Anyway, my 2013 MQMs fell just short of Gold Medallion status at 48,287. I made no effort to book an easy and cheap flight to hit gold and there was no way I was purchasing any MQMs. As such, since January 1st Delta has been showing my upcoming status as Silver. However, today I logged in and saw this…

Delta Status 2014

I’ll now be Gold Medallion in 2014 even though I missed the requirements by a measly 1,713 MQMs. This isn’t all that extraordinary and many airlines take the soft landing approach when a customer falls just short of qualifying, however with all the unfriendly customer changes lately at Delta I wasn’t sure what to expect. Also, doesn’t Delta officially not do these anymore? I guess the big question now is will I still get my Rollover MQMs which began posting for Diamonds today…I’m going to guess absolutely not! Granted I am currently only Platinum so my Rollover MQMs may not have posted yet, but I don’t think there’s any chance that Delta is awarding the just missed status and letting you keep your MQMs. Perhaps there’s an option to be downgraded to the status I qualified for and keep my MQMs?

I didn’t know Delta did “soft landings”. Consider yourself lucky. Maybe Delta feels you are valuable to them and wants to keep your business? From Delta info above, you have 12 segments and 48,000 miles. Not shabby! Obviously you are flying TPAC or TATL and those types of flyers are what any airline wants to have as customers.

I sent a message to Delta asking for similar consideration. Crossing my fingers and i will post if I receive any positive reply. I was SM and had just over 24K MQMs that ultimately did not roll over to 2014.
