One time years and years ago my wife and I went to Pensacola Florida with our young children. We didn’t have a lot of money and in the era before the internet we didn’t make reservations. We rolled into town to find that everything was full except an old Howard Johnsons. It was terrible. I’m sure by world standards it wasn’t so bad but it was in a bad area of town, the door locks didn’t work,it had huge cockroaches all over and was filthy. I’ve also heard the Radisson near Six Flags in St. Louis is really bad. It’s actually funny to read Trip Advisor reviews.

One time, we stayed at a dump. We had no choice as we went to the first Mardi Gras after Hurricane Katrina. Almost all hotels were totally booked, mostly with relief workers for the storm damage. Many hotels were also not reopened yet, because of storm damage. St. Vincent’s Guest House in New Orleans was an orphanage and a home for unwed mothers. Building was built in 1861. At the time of trip, Trip-Advisor was a much smaller site. So from the very little info available, we made a reservation. It was a dump, I mean DUMP! And, I understand it still is. We stayed for 3 nights, tried to find someplace else to stay with no success. We grinned and bared with the experience. Now, I research everything to “n”th degree.

My husband and I stayed part of the night at the Grey Squirrel Inn near Bug Bear after celebrating Thanksgiving at his step-brother’s home with his whole family–trying not to drive after drink ta nd eating so much. We weren’t expecting much, but boy was it awful. The “decor” was 1970s non-chic, with peeling paint, torn and stained carpet, and a grisly looking shower/tub that might have staged a Psycho scene some years before. No working heat or a/c, and the room was either hot as hades from other rooms’ heating or freezing if we opened the windows. The “king” bed was 2 doubles pushed together that didn’t quite fit well, were incredibly lumpy and uneven, and we slumped in the middle uncomfortably for maybe an hr…before giving up and just driving home in the middle of the night.
